For the past four years, Seneca Libraries, Teaching & Learning, and ITS have been supporting digital media skills through an initiative called The Sandbox.

The Sandbox includes face-to-face workshops and online tutorials on various topics, including creating videos, designing infographics, building websites, 3D printing, and creating digital stories. The Sandbox has studios at three campuses (Newnham, Seneca@York, and Markham).

The Sandbox supports faculty and students. A typical interaction could include

  • Faculty develop a concept for a student project;
  • The Sandbox meets with faculty to discuss technical skills required for the project. Faculty are encouraged to attend a workshop or book one-on-one training; and,
  • The faculty then assigns the project to their students. The Sandbox often delivers a face-to-face workshop to the students, or the faculty will use one of The Sandbox’s online modules with their students.

Students then book time in a studio to work on their projects and/or consult with Sandbox staff for troubleshooting. Equipment provided ranges from iMacs to HD Camcorders, DSLR cameras, wireless microphones, 3D printers, and more. Students may borrow additional equipment from the ITS Helpdesk.

For more information, visit The Sandbox website.
