What are 3D Models?

Realistic, three-dimensional digital replicas of physical objects.

3D models can be viewed from all angles, providing more information to the user than a 2D image. They can be used as stand-alone learning objects, or incorporated into AR and VR experiences.

How can 3D models promote learning?

3D models are interactive by nature and invite users to rotate, zoom in, walk around and explore the digital object. 3D models allow students to:

  • spend more time inspecting equipment, tools or parts
  • examine objects that can't be seen due to their size or location, for example molecules or internal organs
  • explore the relationship between parts and their functions using animated models

3D models can be viewed on a desktop computer, mobile device or VR headset, depending on the 3D viewer that is used to display the model.

3D model files. Search these libraries:

3D viewer. A 3D viewer displays models on a web browser and includes controls which allow the user to rotate, move, zoom and in some cases expand the object's parts.

How is it made?

3D models are created by 3D designers using 3D modelling software.
