Quizlet is a flashcard-style quiz site (Quizlet.com) that is also accessible via an app for iOS or Android. It's free but also offers premium features. The site has a well-established online community of more than 50 million active users in more than 100 countries. Study sets can be run in different quiz formats including fill-in-the blanks, true/false and even fun games, including a drag-and-drop matching game. Each quiz format has a unique URL that can be shared with students for easy access without the need to log in to an account. Moreover, it is quite easy for professors to create their own study sets, add photos and even record audio.

Professors can bookmark a list of shared Quizlet study sets, which are available for a wide range of subjects. Then, either in class or for homework practice, students can complete the assigned quizzes. Professors can also have students create their own Quizlet study sets and use them to quiz each other prior to a test. Language teachers will appreciate the "spell" quiz format where students hear each word in a list and then must spell it correctly. Note: some shared quizzes are of low quality or sloppily designed, so professors should preview a selected quiz before implementing it in class – or create their own quizzes!

The guide provides guidelines and examples to help faculty consider the information students might be giving up when using a new tool. It is intended for quick use of free or low-cost online tools and not for larger, more costly tools that require more rigorous data privacy vetting.
Quizlet is primarily geared towards studying basic knowledge in a flashcard-like manner. For example, students can match a key word to its definition or picture, or answer a factual question (e.g., "What is the capital of Australia?" > "Canberra"). If any questions are answered incorrectly, the site shows the correct answer and then exposes the student to that question again at the end of the study set for more practice.
