Socrative is both a website (Socrative.com) and an app (for iOS and Android) that allows professors to create a free account and design (or share) interactive quizzes with students. The site has a well-established user base of more than a million teachers. It's free but also offers premium features.

Socrative is useful for quizzing students on basic facts, checking their understanding by having them complete short answers to questions, and surveying their opinions when discussing issues or other subjective subject matter. A key benefit is the ability to run a test outside of class time, which some similar sites (e.g., Kahoot) lack. Aside from planned quizzes, professors can also create ones for common problems (e.g., capitalization errors, commonly confused words) and get them up and running in a matter of minutes. By its very nature, Socrative can significantly reduce prep time and photocopying.
The Quick guide to secure handling of confidential student information for faculty using online learning tools (.PDF) (developed by the Teaching & Learning Centre and ITS) helps faculty choose secure online tools for teaching. The guide provides guidelines and examples to help faculty consider the information students might be giving up when using a new tool. It is intended for quick use of free or low-cost online tools and not for larger, more costly tools that require more rigorous data privacy vetting.
Socrative quizzes can be run live in class or assigned for homework. First, the professor logs in and starts a quiz. Then, students use the student app (or the student web-based login) to "join" the professor's classroom and complete the quiz at their own pace. There are a variety of quiz types, including multiple-choice, short answer and even a fun "Space Race" game. Once the quiz is over, the professor can view or download a report of students' scores. For quick, formative feedback, the professor can choose to display a live score chart to the class, hide students' names and review any question(s) that most students answered incorrectly.
