View all the Teaching & Learning Centre Spark Plugs!
by Karen Spiers, Manager in the Teaching & Learning Centre
The Teaching & Learning Centre wrapped up Teaching & Learning Day Winter 2023 (a one-day conference dedicated to showcasing and sharing ideas and activities about how to enhance teaching and learning) with over 100 faculty in attendance!
This full-day conference featured a keynote presentation by Dr. Robert Clapperton, Associate Professor in Professional Communication at The Creative School at Toronto Metropolitan University and co-founder of Ametros Learning. The day also included technology-focused workshops in the morning and a Tech Crawl in the afternoon.
Dr. Clapperton presented a timely keynote presentation focused on “The Promise and Peril of ChatGPT and other Large Models to Critical Thinking & Creativity”, and discussed the risks and opportunities presented by the onslaught of large language models in academia and how they can inhibit or enhance the expression of critical thinking and creativity. Dr. Clapperton also hosted several fireside chats with faculty following his keynote address.
Morning workshops included conversations with Seneca’s Teaching Award Winners Athena and Philip, at-home multi-cam with Open Broadcaster Suite (OBS), flexible teaching tools with a UDL lens, education in the Metaverse, H5P, Open Educational Resources (OER), using the Flexible technology classrooms, and creating accessible PowerPoint documents.
Following lunch, attendees were invited to join in the Teaching & Learning “Tech Crawl” where they could explore the latest technology trends and advancements in a fun and engaging way.
The Tech Crawl featured 8 technology focused sessions delivered by Hypothesis, Kritik, Adobe Creative Cloud, Mentimeter, Seneca’s One Button Studio, The Seneca Sandbox, and C.O.W. Cart (Classroom on Wheels). Each 20-minute session ran 5 times over the course of the afternoon allowing faculty to attend multiple sessions of their choice.
Rounding out the day was an augmented reality (AR) Scavenger Hunt where players used their phone or tablet to view a different AR scene at each Tech Crawl location to reveal a hidden word. Players who collected all the hidden words were entered into a draw for a prize. Congratulations to the winners:
Resources from the event, including any recordings, will be available on the event website.
Save the date! The next Teaching & Learning Day is on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.
