Applied research is a distinctive feature of the polytechnic model of applied learning, which provides rich experiential learning opportunities for students across all credentials. As paid Research Assistants, students work with industry on real-world challenges directly related to their field of study; refine human skills related to collaboration, planning, and knowledge mobilization; and build relationships with future employers.
Faculty are the backbone of Seneca Polytechnic’s applied research enterprise. Faculty lead applied research projects as Principal Investigators; they are responsible for developing and implementing research plans while guiding, mentoring, and supervising student Research Assistants. Faculty participating in applied research gain experience and enhance skills, informing teaching practices and improving the curriculum, while benefiting from a unique opportunity to mentor students on their academic journey.
Seneca’s Applied Research Office (ARO) removes the administrative burden of applied research, allowing faculty to focus on planning and leading research projects – the ARO provides a robust set of supports for faculty engaging in applied research, including:

Designed specifically with faculty in mind, this half-day event will feature a keynote presentation by long-time Seneca partner, Just Vertical, a panel discussion about faculty research experiences, project presentations by student and faculty researchers, and an awards ceremony recognizing outstanding achievements.
Learn about all the research services provided by the ARO; join us and be inspired by the research work and opportunities open to you at Seneca.
