It seems these days that discussions about higher education are dominated by an array of challenges facing both professors and students alike. From the impact of AI, to teaching and learning in online modalities, to concerns about the level of preparedness of our students, it’s easy for educators to feel overwhelmed navigating the realities of today’s classrooms.

We may ask ourselves, “Am I still having fun?”

At our upcoming Teaching & Learning Day Fall 2026, we invite you to rekindle your passion for teaching by becoming a learner once more and (re)discovering the power of active learning.

Active learning is an evidence-based approach that engages students in the process of constructing knowledge through meaningful activities that require them to think critically, analyze problems, create solutions, and apply concepts. The emphasis is placed on what students are doing to learn, instead of what professors are doing to teach. Through active learning, students become the conductors of their own learning journeys, rather than passive passengers just along for the ride.

The benefits of active learning strategies are more relevant than ever. By working at higher cognitive levels of Bloom’s taxonomy, students develop important critical thinking skills, gain deeper insights into course material, and forge meaningful connections between theoretical concepts and real-world applications. These are crucial competencies for students to master in an AI-fueled world.

Active learning activities support student success by scaffolding learning, encouraging participation, and providing learners with immediate, useful feedback. Strategies can be tailored to any learning modality (in-person, online, flex) and naturally embrace multiple means of action and expression. In addition, students are more likely to retain knowledge they construct themselves – and have fun in the process!
