AI Literacy and Generative AI for Educators | The Teaching & Learning Centre | Seneca Polytechnic

In this session, faculty members will learn more about Generative AI by exploring its foundations, functionalities, and implications. Participants will gain an understanding of how Generative AI differs from traditional AI, the mechanics behind machine learning, algorithms, artificial neural networks (ANNs), Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPTs), and Large Language Models (LLMs). The session will also address ethical considerations, opportunities for AI integration in education, and practical strategies for evaluating AI outputs. Additionally, an introduction to Microsoft Copilot will be provided, showcasing its potential to enhance productivity and innovation in academic settings.

It is recommended that you attend this workshop before attending the other GenAI workshops, to ensure you have the necessary AI literacy skills to succeed in the subsequent workshops.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1. Differentiate between Generative AI and traditional AI: Understand the unique characteristics and applications of Generative AI compared to more conventional AI technologies
2. Explain the underlying technologies: Describe the principles of machine learning, algorithms, ANNs, GPTs, and LLMs, and how they contribute to the functionality of Generative AI
3. Evaluate AI outputs critically: Develop skills to assess the quality, reliability, and biases in AI-generated content
4. Discuss ethical considerations and opportunities: Engage in informed discussions about the ethical implications and potential benefits of integrating AI in educational contexts
5. Utilize Microsoft Copilot effectively: Gain practical knowledge on how to leverage Copilot to enhance teaching, research, and administrative tasks
