“Human-centred design thinking: An effective and inspiring framework for new faculty”
Marcy Slapcoff
August 22, 2019
The myth of post-secondary teaching is that any expert can teach when in reality, effective instruction is an ongoing process of problem-solving where faculty ask questions such as: What do my students need to learn and why? Who are these students and how can I design learning experiences they find meaningful? How do I evaluate this learning and gather feedback to improve the next iteration? In my work in educational development, I have come to see how using a framework based on human-centred design thinking can lead faculty to find creative and practical answers to these questions. Not only does this framework help to align outcomes with results, it also foregrounds values like empathy and collective creativity, and promotes practices like brainstorming and prototyping. During this session, I will share concrete strategies for implementing this framework, and attendees will have the opportunity to apply ideas to their own contexts within applied arts and technologies, considering ways to enhance syllabus design, plan for the first day of class, and support student learning all semester long.
