"I Learned, I Became" keynote presentation from Hillary Diane Andales at the Teaching & Learning Summer Conference on Aug. 26, 2021
Like all children, Hillary was always curious about the world around her. But at times during her education, her curiosity was something to be guarded and protected from schooling. Yet at other times, her curiosity was something that transformed her—not just into a student who knew more, but also into a person with a stronger identity. In this talk, Hillary recounts the stories of when she assumed the identities of a researcher in English class, an educator in Pre-Calculus class, a physicist in Classical Mechanics class, a critical scientist in STS class, and so on. More importantly, she tells the story of how she brings these identities outside the classroom as a science communicator, aspiring astrophysicist, and peer mentor. In her experience, true learning is becoming. In addition, she also offers her perspective on how to make education more meaningful and how to make the classroom a transformative space.
Hillary is a science communicator and aspiring astrophysicist from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
She is best known as the 2017 Winner of the international Breakthrough Junior Challenge where she placed 1st out of 11,000 entries and received $400,000 in prizes for her educational video on the physics of relativity.
At MIT, she pursues her undergraduate studies in physics while doing research in both astrophysics (MIT Kavli Institute) and physics education (MIT Edgerton Center). Outside of MIT, she is a rising Filipino science communicator whose personal mission is to share both the excitement and life-saving value of science. So far, her work has reached more than 8 million views worldwide. She has also been a speaker at more than 50 science- and education-related events in the Philippines and in international venues such as the United Nations in Vienna and Adobe conventions.
