What are ancillary fees?
Ancillary fees support services and activities that students rely on outside the classroom. They help fund things not covered by tuition.
At Seneca, our ancillary fees cover the cost of many important services, including student life programming, technology support, athletics, health and counselling and career development. These are all things that support more than learning but also well-being, community and professional development.
These fees are mandatory and regulated by provincial legislation. Learn more about ancillary fees and the supports and services they cover.
How are academic costs categorized for students?
Generally, the academic costs students will be responsible for can be found in the following categories:
Where can students find a description of their fees?
Tuition fees, ancillary fees and program ancillary fees (where applicable) can be viewed in Student Home, by choosing “Financial Account,” then “Account Activity.” Students can also click on the “Costs” tab of their program page on Seneca’s website, which also includes estimated costs for textbooks and other learning supplies.
When are ancillary fees due?
Tuition and ancillary fees are due on the first day of classes. Students should refer to their fee statement and Student Home for details.
Generally, fees are posted one month prior to the start of enrolment and are posted daily for newly admitted students, readmitted students or those transferring programs or joining late. Account adjustments are ongoing until day nine of the term.
In some rare cases, fees may added after the first day of classes.
Can students opt out of ancillary fees?
Most ancillary fees are mandatory for all students. If a domestic student can show proof of pre-existing coverage, they can opt-out of dental or medical coverage at the beginning of each academic year. Domestic students can complete the online opt-out form with the third-party insurance provider.
Under legislation, there is no medical/dental opt-out option for international students.
International students may receive a credit for the International Health Insurance fee if they have a valid Ontario Health Insurance Plan card or number, or if they are eligible for the Interim Federal Health Program. Information about the refunds and related deadlines can be found in The Service Hub.
