On March 29, seven HRM students in Professor Bob Thompson’s Industrial Relations class represented Seneca in an intercollegiate mock collective bargaining assignment with students from the University of Toronto MIRHR program. Deploying their knowledge in labour relations and collective bargaining, Seneca students took on the role as union members to negotiate a new collective agreement with management (played by U of T students) for the reopening of a Kingston bakery. Great strides were made by Seneca students in fighting for key improvements to health and safety, pay and premiums, vacation, paid time off, hours of work, and union security. After nearly three hours of intense bargaining, no agreement was made. Nonetheless, our students found this assignment extremely rewarding and interactive, while developing their negotiation skillset and strategies. They truly valued this experience and enjoyed collaborating with each other.
