Seneca College is once again offering Occupational Specific Language Training (OSLT), federally funded workplace communication courses.  OSLT courses teach students how to interact with co-workers, clients and employers effectively in the Canadian workplace. All at no cost to the student.

Through practical exercises, students learn the essentials of clear communication in various formats, including email, phone and in person.  The courses are sector-specific, Accounting and Finance, Business Entrepreneurship, Sales and Marketing and Technology and cover topics like introducing yourself professionally, presenting in a clear and persuasive manner, engaging in small talk and participating effectively in meetings.

The training also focuses on navigating the Canadian job market and making the right impression on employers. Students have support in creating effective resumes, updating their Linkedin profiles, customizing their cover letters and attending mock interview sessions.  Students are informed about resources, like professional associations and mentorship programs that can further help them achieve their career goals.

A key part of the OSLT training is for students to learn about the importance of networking as a way to find out about job opportunities. The OSLT class provides a chance for students to start building a network in Canada.  Through small group exercises and roleplaying activities, students practise their skills, ask questions and network with her classmates – other internationally-trained professionals. OSLT classes allow newcomers to enter the Canadian job market with confidence.

ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible for OSLT, students need to be Permanent Residents or Convention Refugees, (not Canadian citizens or Refugee Claimants), have a Canadian Language Benchmark level 6 – 8, and have prior work experience or training in the sector.
