Occupation-specific Language Training (OSLT) allows internationally-trained professionals to continue working in their chosen career here in Canada. These free courses offer students both the language support as well as the socio-cultural insight needed to function in a Canadian workplace. One student commented, “For me, registering for this course has been an excellent decision because it allows me to improve and learn a lot of new tools using the OSLT platform. Additionally, I think the dynamics and the feedback that I am receiving from my teacher motivate me to keep moving forward in my continuous learning.”
Students in the OSLT Business Entrepreneurship, Sales and Marketing course have recently worked on their presentation skills where they were tasked with researching and presenting a franchise as a possible investment opportunity. They followed up with practicing writing questions to create marketing surveys. A student explained, “The OSLT program was so important in building my confidence in speaking as this program gives you the tools to be an entrepreneur if you have that goal or to find a job in your field but not worrying about how fluent you are or being shy about your accent. It is a fully hands-on course. Also, and just as important, the networking opportunity is incredible.”
Students will go on to learning email writing, practicing telephone strategies as well as business meeting skills. They will also practice job interview skills both from the perspective of an employee and an employer.
Seneca College will be offering new OSLT courses in April, Accounting and Finance, Technology and Business Entrepreneurship, Sales and Marketing. OSLT courses are all online with students meeting virtually on Zoom two evenings a week.
To be eligible for OSLT, students need to be Permanent Residents or Convention Refugees, (not Canadian citizens or Refugee Claimants), have a Canadian Language Benchmark level 6 – 8, and have prior work experience or training in the sector.
