The Intercultural Dialogue Institute has been giving Public Heroes Awards since 2011 to recognize the outstanding service of GTA first responders (including police, fire and paramedic services from Peel, Toronto, York, Durham, OPP, RCMP) CAF members, HMCS York, ORNGE and corrections.

Awards recipients are selected by a selection committee based on three criteria: Altruism, Dedication and Community Involvement.

Inspector Melissa Thomas of Mississauga Fire and Emergency services and Professor at Seneca College - FCET has been selected as a 2023 IDI GTA Public Hero award recipient. She was nominated by Fire Chief Deryn Rizzi and Deputy Chief of Fire Prevention, Samuel Williams. Her efforts to bring joy and connection to the CAF members and veterans at Sunnybrook through the Christmas Card Caper have demonstrated her commitment to community involvement and dedication to making a difference. Incorporating diverse holiday greetings reflects her deep respect for cultural diversity and her commitment to inclusivity.

The SenecaCE is proud of her accomplishments and celebrates this honour with her.
