Let’s virtually meet over coffee/tea for our first SELS “Accessibility Café: Disability Speakers Series” led by Nancy La Monica on Tuesday, November 14th at 11:00 am (ET). Join here.
Please welcome Dr. Cameron McKenzie as he shares a co-authored paper he recently published, "Insights from Exclusion: Lived Experiences of Two Neurodiverse Instructors" (McKenzie and Khan, 2023).
Synopsis: Using a disability justice framework, two faculty members with disabilities describe their lived experience of inaccessibility and social exclusion in the university. Systems analysis has revealed its roots in traditional neoliberalism. We advocate for structural change for our profession, and for the broader post-secondary environment.
Bio: Cameron McKenzie (he/him), an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Social Work, is committed to dismantling barriers for equity-deserving communities, in part because of his lived experience as neurodiverse and Queer. His research has examined political and social structures that create health inequity for the 2SLGBTQ+ community. Currently, he is leading a SSHRC-funded investigation of barriers facing post-secondary students with learning disabilities in the context of accessibility policy.
Stay tuned for our next “Accessibility Café: Disability Speakers Series” when we welcome back Dr. Jay Dolmage this winter.
