On February 15th SenecaAlumni facilitated an event that allowed INS students to meet and hear from INS Alumni and employers who have hired INS students in the past.

The event started off with everyone enjoying some pizza and refreshments, there were door prizes for three lucky attendees, and everyone received some Seneca swag.

Attendees gained valuable information about what their career options could look like after graduating from the INS program. The three panellists shared their unique paths to and from INS, detailing their personal education journeys and what they found worked for them. Attendees also heard from representatives at Seneca Works  and the Learning Centre, both Seneca departments that regularly have opportunities for WIL students in the INS program to apply for. These Seneca professionals offered some tips and tricks for resume and cover letter writing that will get your application noticed by employers:

  1. Customize your resume letter to each job you apply to.
  2. Look for keywords in job postings and add those skills or information to your resume.
  3. First impressions are important!
  4. Manage your responses and facial expressions in the interview stage, make sure you always look and act professional.
  5. Pay attention to resume submission instructions.
  6. Apply apply apply!

SenecaAlumni shared some of the many benefits and perks that are available to students post-graduation, including the SenecaWorks CareerPortal, where they have access to a wide variety of job postings for 2 years after completing their studies.

The event ended with the INS Alumni panel giving the current INS students some tips:

INS gives you the tools to find your passion, it’s up to you to use them.

  1. Grad program funding opportunities differ from school to school, know your options and pay attention to different benefits.
  2. Take advantage of the Capstone Project! Academic writing experience is useful in further studies.
  3. Take advantage of Seneca student benefits.
  4. Explore study abroad and travel opportunities with the school like Global Learning Abroad courses and programs.
  5. Figure out what approach or supports you need to help you learn best, and make connections with other students
