On April 17th, Seneca’s Dual Credit students from the Urban Indigenous Education Centre (UIEC) participated in a walking art tour of Newnham campus. The tour was led by Sean Hayes from Seneca Archives, who highlighted the many First Nations, Inuit, Metis and Two-Spirit artwork located throughout our buildings.

In partnership with the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), the UIEC Dual Credit pilot program supports Indigenous and non-Indigenous students as they undertake collaborative projects and produce works that contribute to the reconciliation process. Students receive support from high school teacher Joanna Seydoux, who encourages all students to express themselves through their artwork.

As part of the program, students take AFD181: Drawing I, taught by Professor and artist, Lindsey Rosenow. As part of a class assignment, students were encouraged to sketch aspects of the artwork that resonated with them during the walking tour. The tour helped UIEC students hone their skills and reflect on different styles of artwork.

Artwork Credit: Young Bears by Pitseolak Ashoona

Students were captured sketching bears from Pitseolak Ashoona’s Young Bears.

We hope students will continue to be inspired by the Indigenous artwork on-campus as they work to complete their Dual Credit course.
