Week 9: Hiren Mistry Workshops and Curriculum Integration Project Deliverables

Please join us for a special online session on Monday, March 25th from 5-7pm or in-person on Tuesday, March 26th as we welcome guest speaker Hiren Mistry. He will be leading attendees through a workshop on culturally responsive and effective inclusive teaching and assessment practices.

Hiren is a dedicated researcher and educator focusing on the intersection of policy, diversity, and educational leadership.  He is currently completing his PhD in Higher Education and Leadership at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto (OISE/UT), and currently serves in the role of Vice Principal at White Oaks SS in the Halton District School Board. As a consultant on Seneca’s Curriculum Integration Project, Hiren has developed a “Responsive Planning Template” that applies culturally responsive and anti-oppressive pedagogy to lesson planning, along with a focus on the importance of including student voice. During this session, he will share this resource along with context and discussion on research that informed its development, and how it might be helpful in the postsecondary classroom. Participants will have opportunities to reflect on their own teaching practice and identify areas for growth.

Additionally, the third Week 9 session, on Thursday, March 28th, will be an opportunity for faculty champions to have dedicated time to discuss and work on their Curriculum Integration Plan. This will still be an online session; please feel free to join via this Zoom link.

Winter 2024 Giveaway Day

We really can’t believe it, but we are in the home stretch of the Winter 2024 Curriculum Integration Project! To celebrate the work of all of the faculty champions in this cohort, the CI planning team will host the Giveaway Day on Tuesday April 16, 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Faculty champions are invited to gather and reflect on their journey with the Curriculum Integration process. Come join us for a final in-person celebration at Newham Campus in K5100. Register for the Winter 2024 Giveaway Day!

Call for Winter 2024 Faculty Champion Video Testimonials

Lights, camera, share! Want to share your thoughts about your experience in the Curriculum Integration project with your fellow faculty members? We invite you to film a short testimonial as part of a video archive for this cohort. In your video testimonial, you'll have the opportunity to discuss your approach to the project and what you've discovered along the way. Filming will take place at Newnham Campus, during the week of April 1-5. If you are interested, please email Naomi Go—spots are limited!

Curriculum Café

Our next Curriculum Café is virtual and will be held on Monday April 8, 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm. (Please note the new time—the team did not want to interfere with the solar eclipse!) This virtual Curriculum Café will be focused on Curriculum Integration Plans. Note: All sessions are open to non-faculty champions. Register for the April 8 Curriculum Café in MyPD today!

Don’t miss out on our final virtual Curriculum Café. It will be held on Friday, April 12, 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm. This Curriculum Café will be the last session for faculty to discuss their deliverables and to just share their experiences and observations. Note: All sessions are open to non-faculty champions. Register for the April 12 Curriculum Café in MyPD today!

Seneca’s Curriculum Café is a bi-weekly informal get-together where faculty share and learn about curriculum integration in Truth & Reconciliation (TRC), Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI), and Sustainability (SUS).

Event Recap

Sustainability Fair (STARs)

Fresh off their first-ever gold rating with STARS, the Sustainable Seneca team hosted a Sustainability Fair in support of Seneca’s Sustainable Days of Action.

On March 21, 2024 at Newnham campus, over 100 students, staff and faculty engaged with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by designing mason jars for herb gardens (SDG 15), and learning about Seneca’s sexual harassment policy (SDG 5), electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and carpooling options (SDG7), and carbon and waste reduction initiatives for fashion (SDG 12), to name just a few initiatives.

Delicious Seneca honey was also available for purchase, with a percentage of proceeds going to student bursaries through the Campaign for Students.

Thank you to the Sustainable Seneca team for their collaborative spirit with faculty and staff and for successfully engaging the Seneca community – especially students - in the SDGs.

Take action: How will you engage students in Sustainable Seneca activities, now and in the future?
