TRC in the Learning Environment

Adapting the two-eyed seeing approach can create respectful learning experiences that build on both Indigenous and non-Indigenous ways of knowing and learning. This approach can help de-centre certain knowledge systems and encourage a more inclusive learning environment.

Additionally, purposeful, sincere and respectful decision-making in the Indigenization of classroom design is so important. It should be approached with intention, and adhere to Seneca’s Principles of Indigenous Curriculum Engagement (SPICE):

  • Our focus should be on the urban Indigenous experience.
  • No ceremony will be taught in classrooms. It may be experienced but cannot be taught.
  • Seneca's relationships with Indigenous Peoples will be reciprocal in nature. This will be an effort to ensure relationships are fair and equitable and the balance of power should be in the favour of the Indigenous community.
  • We are on Anishinaabe-treatied land, and thus we will follow Anishinaabe protocols and ways of knowing. Indigenous peoples should feel welcome to practice their teachings and ways of being at the Polytechnic, subject to their community protocols.
