Dr. Cory Scurr

Academic Integrity, GenAI, and Assessment Design: Where We Are Now, & Where We Can Go

Generative AI has intensified concerns about cheating, authorship, and the reliability of traditional assessment, but it has also created an opportunity to rethink how we cultivate academic integrity. This keynote will explore how colleges and polytechnics can move beyond a primarily policing-based response and toward an approach grounded in assessment design, ethical technology use, student learning, and institutional trust. The session will examine where AI detection tools currently stand, including their limitations and risks; how assessment can be redesigned to reduce misconduct and support authentic learning; and what emerging issues, such as wearable technologies, signal about the future of academic integrity. Ultimately, this keynote argues that academic integrity and GenAI can co-exist, but only if educators are willing to re-evaluate what we assess, why we assess it, and how students demonstrate their learning.

Speaker Biography

Dr. Cory Scurr is the Chair of the Academic Integrity Council of Ontario (AICO) and the Associate Director, Academic Advising / Outreach & Retention at Conestoga College. In his work, he leads a team of staff who support faculty, students, and administrators through consultations, workshops, and resource development, among other things. Cory also developed and delivers a Micro-Credential on academic integrity, titled "Academic Integrity in Post-Secondary Teaching."

His research interests include faculty barriers and the role of emotion when navigating academic misconduct, as well as examining the nexus of artificial intelligence and academic integrity to inform assessment design.

How Workshop Streams Work

Today’s workshops are designed as immersive, continuous learning experiences. When you choose your workshop stream for Session 1 (Explore & Learn) at 11:30 a.m., you’ll stay with that same cohort and topic for Session 2 (Design & Build) at 1:30 p.m. Your morning session will introduce and explore the topic, while the afternoon session gives you the opportunity to put your learning into practice through hands-on development. Please note your assigned stream room number when you arrive. After the lunch break, you’ll return to the same room and workshop stream to continue your learning.

Neutralizing the "Threat": A Practical Toolkit for (Re)Designing Assessment

Generative AI is often framed as a threat to assessment. This workshop reframes that narrative by providing educators with a practical toolkit for evaluating and redesigning assessments in ways that support learning while maintaining academic integrity. Drawing on concepts such as cognitive offloading, automaticity, evaluative judgment, and authentic assessment, participants will explore how to align technology use with intended learning outcomes and apply decision-making filters — Abandon, Monitor, and Enhance + Adopt — to existing and future assessments.

Bring your own course assignments and apply your newly acquired decision-making filters in a collaborative workshop environment. Move from theory to practice! In this session, you'll apply your newly acquired prompting skills to real-world teaching scenarios, learning to confidently implement these technologies to assist your own work and support your students.

Build Your Own AI Roleplay

Together, we will use Copilot Agent Builder and templates to build and share a simple AI roleplay agent. You’ll have an opportunity to critically evaluate the finished product and discuss how we can use this emerging technology purposefully and responsibly.
