How do we create learning experiences that students will remember?
Students today have more choices than ever about how they engage with learning. While research in the Science of Learning has given us powerful insights into how people learn, the bigger challenge is often inspiring students to invest their attention, curiosity, and effort in the first place.
Drawing on more than two decades of teaching, educational research, and faculty development, Joe Kim explores how evidence-based teaching strategies can foster motivation, curiosity, and a genuine sense of belonging. Through practical examples, memorable stories, and lessons learned from working with thousands of students and educators, participants will discover simple, effective ways to create learning experiences that students don't want to miss.
This keynote invites us to think about creating moments that spark curiosity, build community, and motivate students to engage deeply with their learning. Participants will leave with practical ideas they can implement immediately and a renewed sense of purpose as they prepare for the year ahead.
Joe Kim is a Professor in the Department of Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour at McMaster University, where he has three major roles: Director of Education and Cognition Lab, Academic Director of McCall MacBain Postdoctoral Fellows Teaching and Leadership Program, and principal instructor for the innovative McMaster introductory psychology program. A common link across his numerous roles and career is a desire to implement evidence-based practices that promote life-long learning.

It also shapes the challenges we face as creators and educators, helping us decipher where these new tools add value, where they fall short, and what they mean for teaching and learning in higher education. In this interactive session, educator, music producer, and industry professional Alfio Annibalini explores AI through the lens of a creative working in the music industry.
Through live demonstrations, real-world music industry examples, and practical classroom applications, participants will explore how AI can support creativity, critical thinking, curriculum design, assessment, and student engagement. The session will also address ethical considerations, authorship, and the evolving role of educators in preparing students for an AI-enabled workforce.
Whether you're AI-curious or already experimenting with these tools, you'll leave with practical ideas, thought-provoking questions, and a deeper understanding of how to move beyond the prompt and focus on what remains uniquely human in teaching and creative practice.
Teaching in a Flexible Delivery environment presents a unique opportunity to provide students with ultimate control over their learning environment, allowing them to move fluidly between coming to campus or participating online. This interactive session explores practical ways to seamlessly design and deliver lessons that engage all three groups of learners: in-person, synchronous online via Zoom or Microsoft Teams, and asynchronous via Learn@Seneca.
