Writing a Philosophy of Teaching Statement

This section should provide a short narrative that includes your conception of teaching and learning, a description of how you teach, and an explanation for why you teach that way. Your statement should demonstrate that you are purposeful in your teaching and assessing and that you are a reflective practitioner. This section can also include your goals as a professor and an opportunity to summarize the other sections of your portfolio.

What is the format of the statement of your philosophy of teaching?

Your teaching philosophy can be written in any format that you choose. You may include quotes, references, create visuals, use a question/answer format, a video, etc. It is generally 1-2 pages in length. Writing in first-person and in present tense is most common.

Bring your teaching philosophy to life and try to create a portrait of a person who is intentional about their teaching and assessing practices and is committed to student learning. Help your audience visualize what you do in the classroom and how you create a learning environment for your students that is inclusive and engaging.
