Student Success Director, Seneca’s Sustainability Hackathon
From December 11-15, forty-two Seneca students participated in the Panyapiwat Institute of Management (PIM) Hackathon on Sustainability. This collaboration has further developed a mutual institutional relationship between PIM and Seneca College, and assists in our efforts to encouraging students to join hackathons where they can strengthen their skills in communication, leadership, teamwork, innovation and agility.
From eight qualifying teams, two headed onto the final round. Throughout four days, Seneca students received support from Seneca staff members such as; Ranjan Bhattacharya , who provided a meaningful welcome speech to guests and words of encouragement to our Seneca teams; Mark Buchner , who mentored to students from both institutions; Don Forster , who judged the top ten finalists; John Kucharczuk and Mehdi Akbari , who judged the qualifiers among Seneca teams; and Ronan Wilson from Seneca International, who had been the primary liaison between the institutions.
The event could not have been made possible without great help from Gabriela Coto-Fernandez, Seneca's Sustainability Hackathon Channels Director. Gabriela was bale to plan the logistics of the hackathon schedule despite the twelve-hour time difference between both institutions.
It was a very challenging four days for our participants as the PIM hackathon was conducted during Seneca's finals week but all the teams delivered amazing results. It was a tough competition amongst creative and innovative students from Thailand and Canada. While our teams may not have brought home the win, their entries provided real solutions to one of today's most challenging issues in Sustainability: CO2 emissions. At the same time, it was a great warm up for our Seneca 2022 Sustainability hackathon coming up in March!
They make us #SenecaProud!
