SEMET's Achievement at Skills Ontario Competition 2023 | Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering Technology | Seneca Polytechnic

SEMET participated in the Skills Ontario Competition 2023 at the Toronto Congress Center on May 1st & 2nd, and brought back 2 medals and 1 job offer in the Additive Manufacturing Category and Precision Machining Category:

Additive manufacturing: Seneca Polytechnic's Nick Kwan wins Silver Medal in The 2023 Skills Ontario Additive Manufacturing Competition! 

Nick, who is going into his third semester in the Mechanical Engineering Program, competed against students from across the province in the novel Additive Manufacturing competition.  

The competition, featured not only 3d printing but also 3d scanning and reverse engineering. Nick completed the competition in the shortest time. 

To prepare for the competition, Nick spent months 3d scanning objects with Seneca's 3d Scanner, making PLA spaghetti on 3d printers, and designed thousands of 3d models using computer-aided design software. 

"We're very proud of Nick's accomplishment," said his teacher, Dieter Hastings. "He has a keen attention to detail and is a whiz with anything CAD. We're very excited to see where his passion for engineering takes him in the future, the possibilities are endless." 

 
Precision Machining: Gus Gonalves, an international student from Brazil, won bronze in the Skills Ontario Precision Machining competition. Precision Machining, a crucial process in manufacturing that involves cutting and shaping materials to precise specifications.  

The competition challenged students to produce a part using a manual mill and lathe. According to Gus, his interest in machining began when he was introduced to the field in his native Brazil. "I've always been fascinated by the precision and skill involved in machining," he said. "When I heard about this competition, I knew I had to enter."  

To prepare for the competition, Gus spent months honing his skills in the machine shop turning blocks of metal into chips under the supervision of his mentor, Ankur Patel. 

"I'm honored to have won a bronze medal in this competition," Gus said. "It's been an incredible experience to showcase my skills in precision machining."  

In addition to the bronze medal Gus was awarded a job offer by the competition's sponsor Linamar as a Machinist. Gus' hard work has paid off as a leap forward in his career.
