Curriculum Integration at the Log Cabin

Curriculum Integration at the Log Cabin

SELS and ELI faculty representatives and administrators gathered at the King Campus log cabin on October 26, 2023, for an opportunity to share ideas about the Curriculum Integration project.

Professor Carmen Schlamb facilitated the session, which included a Smudging Ceremony, a walk in the woods to connect with Nature, forest bathing, and learning some history about King campus and its natural surroundings.

Though the rain came down, umbrellas, raincoats, and the natural canopy of the forest kept participants dry and inspired. Throughout the day, the group negotiated ways to integrate Sustainability, TRC, and EDI into the curriculum and how to share these ideas within the school communities going forward.

An excerpt from a poem by Little. Bird (2013) captures the experience.

Cabin In The Woods

I wish I could escape to that cabin in the woods,
Where the trees have a face like no other.
And those trees play songs,
with the breeze sweeping through their branches.
I wish I could hear their songs.
Not just hear, but to actively listen
Because they fill their chords with notes of love.
I want their tunes to brush my ear
and their leaves to gently cover me from above.
The leaves that don't crunch or wither or die.
The leaves are full of ever-increasing life.
When the fallen leaves have touched my skin
Chills cover my flesh and shoot me with a sensation.
I have been touched by this gracious life.
