Seneca’s Curriculum Café is a bi-weekly informal get-together where faculty share and learn about curriculum integration in Truth & Reconciliation (TRC), Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI), and Sustainability (SUS).
This week, we are so happy to introduce Rema Tavares [Video], Manager of Employee Inclusion in the Office of Reconciliation and Inclusion. Watch Rema’s video below to find out how her portfolio lines up with Seneca’s Reconciliation and Inclusion plan!
Understanding unconscious bias is significant when considering approaches to and changes for practice specifically for faculty engaging with their students. Seneca Libraries has compiled a section called Inclusive Writing that includes descriptions of unconscious bias and how it affects communication. Additional resources at the bottom expand the conversation about unconscious bias and one in particular, Recognizing Microaggressions and the Messages They Send explores microaggressions and the messaging that occurs when they appear in the classroom. By reflecting on one’s bias whether conscious or unconscious is a step forward that aligns with Seneca’s Next strategic plan and the Au Large Equitable pillar.
Have you ever felt disconnected from your heritage? Read the article Word Study from There There from Professor Maria Mclean, SELS, who took inspiration from the book There There by Tommy Orange, a story of a young person who learned about his ancestors through learning how to dance a traditional dance at a Pow Wow, to re-envision Land Acknowledgments:
"At Seneca, professors are encouraged to include a Land Acknowledgment, which is a “formal statement that recognizes First Peoples and their unique relationship to their traditional territories” at the beginning of class, and I always like to follow the rules, if I can. So, I read the formal statement at the beginning of class. But after a couple of times, I thought, “How can I make this more relatable?”” (Professor Maria Mclean)
