Let's remain dedicated to these essential heart-to-heart conversations as you strive to meaningfully integrate EDI concepts in your programs and courses. Seneca’s Curriculum Café is an informal get-together where faculty share and learn about curriculum integration in Truth & Reconciliation (TRC), Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI), and Sustainability (SUS).
This year, Seneca Polytechnic and the Office of Reconciliation and Inclusion (ORI) commemorates Asian Heritage Month with art events as art is fundamental for building understanding and challenging assumptions of rich and distinct Asian cultures and societies.
From May 8th to the 15th at the Innovation Gallery, Building K, there was an exhibit of Chinese ink wash paintings featuring the work of Master Tam Shek-Wing. His style blends innovation with tradition, garnering recognition both domestically and internationally.
Also featured on the 8th, was a contemporary Kathak performance with Tanveer Alam, Sindhu Nair and Sukriti Sharma.
For more about Asian Heritage Month, review the upcoming events here and consider ways in which your curricular choices include Asian individuals and communities.
Red Dress Campaign 2024 and Beyond
The School of Fashion and the Office of Reconciliation collaborated for Red Dress Day on May 5th to honour Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG). If you were at Newnham campus on May 5th, you would have seen a window display at the Seneca Boutique. Featured in the window were red dress dolls created by Visual Merchandising Arts students who learned about MMIWG during a workshop at Odeyto. Also, featured in the window was a red dress from designer David Dixon representing the story of Sonya Cywink.
Stemming from discussions about Curriculum Integration and Truth and Reconciliation, the Red Dress Day display will be an annual campaign evolving over the coming years. Acknowledgements to School of Fashion’s Michel Cote, Chair, current APM Scott Mcallister, a previous faculty champion for CI and Professor Shawn Schmidt who recently completed CI training.

How are your students impacted by the climate crisis? Where does your tap water come from? Where does your garbage go after it is collected? Can you name five migratory birds in your area?
These questions – and many more — are addressed in the short course Sustainability in Our Classrooms. This course offers a wide range of topics and strategies that help us integrate sustainability meaningfully into our course. It also offers us some time and space to start thinking about how we relate to the natural world in all its forms and how this might impact our teaching practice. Course Details Faculty participants complete four self-directed learning modules as they explore strategies to integrate environmental, economic, and social sustainability into their courses. Through discussion boards and journals, we will engage with multiple perspectives about the natural world and reflect on climate justice and the impact of the climate crisis on our communities and in the classroom. This course is open to all faculty members. It is also included in the PD Plan for Non Full-Time Faculty. Non-full-time faculty who successfully complete the course requirements will be eligible for remuneration. Participants who complete all modules and submit the final deliverable, a Sustainability Integration Plan, are eligible for a digital badge. The next offering begins on May 21, 2024. If you are interested in joining, read the course details below, see if it is a good fit, and register on MyPD soon to secure your spot.
