It’s like having a course-specific teaching assistant available 24/7—no internet noise, just focused learning.
Before using Seneca MyTutor, let’s consider some of the potential benefits and some of the potential limitations of using this tool. Following that there will be a set of best practices for its use.
Personalized Learning: MyTutor can provide for individual student needs, providing tailored information that the student seeks
Faculty Control: As the instructor of the course, you have full control over what documents you choose to upload to MyTutor
Instant Feedback: MyTutor offers immediate feedback, helping students understand concepts in real-time and allowing for quick correction of mistakes
Informal Assessment: MyTutor will create assessments based on the documents that have been uploaded by the instructor.
Quick Access information: MyTutor can search through all of the documents quickly to search for, and provide, the needed information.
Accessibility: MyTutor is available 24/7 for students to check on course material
Equitable: Available to all students
Cites sources of information: If you search for information, MyTutor will tell you the name of the document from which it found the requested information. This was the student can further enhance learning by going directly to the document.
Great source of Knowledge-based information: finding terms, definitions, lists and other information that is primarily knowledge-based.
Limited Adaptability: MyTutor is not meant to help with most higher-order thinking skills. It will not provide comprehensive answers to complex, open-ended questions or provide alternative strategies. It will basically just ‘repeat’ what the instructor has uploaded.
Technical Issues: MyTutor is susceptible to any technical issues (no wifi, computer hardware failure, etc), just as any other technical tool is.
Academic Integrity – as with all online resources, there is the potential for mis-use or violations of Academic Integrity Policy.
Limited to what the instructor uploads: Depending what the instructor chooses to upload, MyTutor could have limited usefulness.
When used by students as a supplementary resource, NOT to help learn material that they may have missed due to absence. It’s probably better for the student to read over the missed material then use AI Tutor to help with self assessment of understanding.
For recall and knowledge-based information.
When students use it for self-assessment.
Students can use it to make summary notes from a Lesson, a Unit or the whole Course.
For instructors, when students have individual questions about specific concepts, definitions, knowledge, you can send them to AI Tutor to get the help they may need. So it’s a good place to go to FIRST before connecting with a professor.
Make sure students are aware of the resources available in MyTutor (what weeks worth of material, or what concepts)
