Online proctoring, also known as online invigilation, is a method of monitoring students as they complete an assessment, using a combination of software and a student’s webcam. This can include software which restricts students from opening additional web browsers or applications while they are completing their assessment. And online proctoring software can be either automated or live.
At Seneca, all faculty have access to Respondus LockDown Browser, which is a custom browser that restricts the online testing environment. However, to use Respondus Monitor, an automated, remote online proctoring browser extension that monitors student performance during the testing period. At Seneca, Respondus Monitor is a pay-per-use option; there are limited licenses for Monitor available at Seneca. If you are interested in using Respondus Monitor, consider the needs of your course and students. Note that you will need Chair approval for Respondus Monitor.
Respondus LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor are remote proctoring applications for online testing. Together, they lock down the testing environment for online testing and use the student’s webcam to record and analyze the student while they are taking the test to deter cheating. They use artificial intelligence to analyze the recordings – facial detection, motion, and lighting, as well as keyboard activity, mouse movements, and hardware changes are flagged and any suspicious activity is then reported to the instructor.
Our Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor resource space provides faculty, instructors, and students with the tools and guidance they need to complete online assessments on a secure, proctored platform.
