This week we highlight another of our new Virtual Learning Strategy (VLS) resources – Rethinking Assessment Strategies for Online Learning: a short course for post-secondary educators.
Seneca’s Teaching and Learning Centre, along with its partners from Durham and Algonquin Colleges and the University of Ottawa, have developed an interactive web book to guide instructors through the process of implementing fair and equitable authentic and alternative assessments. Authentic assessments ask students to engage in real-world tasks. Alternative assessments, including videos and other digital assignments, measure achievement using non-traditional methods. Both strategies address common online testing challenges, promote deeper learning, and foster student success.

Beginning in May, we will be offering a series of PD opportunities for faculty based on this resource that will take you through the steps of designing and evaluating an authentic or alternative assessment. You will also explore how to develop a balanced assessment strategy for your course that includes meaningful feedback to your students. Registration will be available through MyPD. Stay tuned for updates!
We are assembling a collection of inspiring authentic and alternative assessment examples from college and university instructors across Ontario. Each exemplar includes a brief description of the assignment, links to learning outcomes, and course/program level. Some examples include a copy of the assignment and evaluation rubric. See what your colleagues have already shared.
