View all the Teaching & Learning Centre Spark Plugs!
The Teaching & Learning Centre is excited to announce our upcoming webinar series focusing on using Generative AI in your teaching! This is a four-part webinar series held virtually and it runs this March:
All are now open for registration in MyPD. Continue below to learn more about these webinars.
Tuesday, Mar. 4 – 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Eastern60-minute workshop with 30 minutes at the end for questions
In this session, faculty members will learn more about Generative AI by exploring its foundations, functionalities, and implications. Participants will gain an understanding of how Generative AI differs from traditional AI, the mechanics behind machine learning, algorithms, artificial neural networks (ANNs), Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPTs), and Large Language Models (LLMs). The session will also address ethical considerations, opportunities for AI integration in education, and practical strategies for evaluating AI outputs. Additionally, an introduction to Microsoft Copilot will be provided, showcasing its potential to enhance productivity and innovation in academic settings.
It is recommended that you attend this webinar or watch the recording before attending the other GenAI webinars, to ensure you have the necessary AI literacy skills to succeed in the subsequent webinars.

Tuesday, Mar. 11 – 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Eastern60-minute workshop with 30 minutes at the end for questions
This session will equip faculty members with the skills and knowledge to craft effective prompts for Generative AI. Participants will explore the concept of prompts, different types of prompts (casual/brief, conversational/refined, and structured/step-by-step), and how Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPTs) interact with these prompts. The session will introduce the CLEAR framework for prompting and cover prompting basics, including context, roleplay, instructions, outcome indicators, and examples. Attendees will learn about various prompt structures, such as the Act Context Deeply Questions (ACDQ) structure and the Reference Request Format and Framing (RRFF) structure, as well as specifications for image prompting. The session will include practical examples of prompting exercises for the classroom and faculty uses of prompting, concluding with a hands-on activity to practice these techniques.

Tuesday, Mar. 18 – 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Eastern60-minute workshop with 30 minutes at the end for questions
The public debut of generative AI (GenAI) in late 2022 placed powerful new creation tools in the hands of students, transforming the ways academic work can be produced. This workshop explores how the assessment of learning is changing in a post-AI era. Now more than ever, educators are being asked to rethink traditional assessment approaches that emphasize the summarization of knowledge in favour of those that evaluate higher-order processes. By re-examining learning goals, we will consider how assessment design can support the appropriate integration of GenAI skills. Through reflection, discussion, and example sharing, participants will uncover their assessment challenges along with strategies for making assessments more meaningful and relevant in today’s AI-driven world.

GenAI Assessment ideas – share your ideas and see what colleagues have shared, too
Tuesday, Mar. 25 – 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Eastern60-minute workshop with 30 minutes at the end for questions
This session will equip faculty members with the knowledge and skills to use Generative AI tools in your own day-to-day work. During this session, we will explore the different tools available to faculty, and we will discuss the ways in which we should be transparent with our students about their usage.
While using Seneca’s GenAI Policy statement as a lens, we will discuss the different use cases of faculty-GenAI-usage and determine the best practices for faculty and student use, while maintaining data-privacy concerns.
