Online

This is a 60-minute workshop with 30 minutes at the end for questions.

This session will equip faculty members with the skills and knowledge to craft effective prompts for Generative AI. Participants will explore the concept of prompts, different types of prompts (casual/brief, conversational/refined, and structured/step-by-step), and how Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPTs) interact with these prompts. The session will introduce the CLEAR framework for prompting and cover prompting basics, including context, roleplay, instructions, outcome indicators, and examples. Attendees will learn about various prompt structures, such as the Act Context Deeply Questions (ACDQ) structure and the Reference Request Format and Framing (RRFF) structure, as well as specifications for image prompting. The session will include practical examples of prompting exercises for the classroom and faculty uses of prompting, concluding with a hands-on activity to practice these techniques.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the concept and types of prompts: Identify and differentiate between casual/brief, conversational/refined, and structured/step-by-step prompts
  2. Explain GPT interactions with prompts: Describe how GPTs process and respond to different types of prompts
  3. Utilize the CLEAR framework for effective prompting: Apply the CLEAR framework to create clear, concise, and effective prompts
  4. Implement prompting basics and structures: Develop prompts using context, roleplay, instructions, outcome indicators, and examples, and utilize specific prompt structures like the Act Context Deeply Questions structure and the Reference Request Format and Framing structure
  5. Create and evaluate image prompts: Understand the specifications for image prompting and create effective image prompts
  6. Apply prompting techniques in educational settings: Use practical examples of prompting exercises and faculty uses of prompting to enhance teaching and learning experiences
  7. Practice and refine prompting skills: Engage in hands-on activities to practice and improve prompting techniques
