On February 28, the School College Work Initiative (SCWI) hosted a Healthcare Pathways Event for York Region Catholic District School Board’s (YCDSB) grade 11 and 12 high school students. These select students are working towards their Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) in the Health and Wellness sector. Teachers and their students were welcomed to beautiful King campus by the Dual Credit Team for a day of experiential workshops.

The interactive workshops highlighted five of Seneca’s health and wellness programs including: Nursing, Veterinary Technician & Veterinary Assistant, Therapeutic Recreation, Fitness and Health Promotion, and Honours Bachelor of Healthcare Administration. Industry- experienced faculty led a series of workshops which were supported by current Seneca students, giving prospective high school students unique insight into campus life.

Workshop examples included a tour of the Nanji Foundation School of Nursing, including our state-of-the-art Patient Care Simulation Lab which allows students to simulate direct care in a healthcare setting. In the skills lab, students learned how to safely measure and give an injection.

Students interested in our Veterinary Technician & Veterinary Assistant programs were escorted to our 26,000 square foot barn, where they caught a glimpse of our large animals, including horses. Students were given a tour of the clinical classrooms and learned the importance of practicing procedures on simulated animals.

YCDSB’s Pathways Consultant Siobhain Bondy shared, “The event hosted by Seneca was an amazing experience for the Health and Wellness YCDSB SHSM students from St. Maximillian Kolbe and Cardinal Carter Catholic High schools.  The students were able to tour the cutting edge facilities at King campus.  The patient care simulation labs allowed students to have a hands-on lab.  The students were fully engaged in all aspects of the tour including a hands-on injection experience.  The Dual Credit team continues to provide superior field trip experiences for high school students.”

Seneca is proud to offer Dual Credit courses in the Healthcare field including PNA100: Anatomy and Physiology for the Practical Nurse and BOA112: Behavior of Animals at our King and Newnham campuses and hopes to welcome back many of YCDSB’s students into our classrooms!
